Daddy-Daughter Double
By Jennifer Lee
Working as a pediatric nurse practitioner, I often smile when I walk into an examination room and find a father who’s brought in his son for a medical issue, especially if I see a camouflage hat. That’s my cue to break up the tension of whatever situation has befallen them and bring up deer hunting. It works like a charm—after discussing the physical characteristics of a mature whitetail or the ballistics of my 7mm-08, the looks on their faces are always priceless, and the mishap, at least temporarily, forgotten.
That kind of conversation is easy for me, and I think that’s why it works on my patients. I am the middle daughter of three to an avid outdoorsman, and, as such, I spent much of my childhood hunting and fishing with my dad. By the age of nine, I had memorized the “10 Commandments” of gun safety and started deer hunting with him frequently in South Texas.

Happy Scholarship Recipient
Last month we told you about the scholarship TTHA had awarded Walker Jackson so that he could attend a Texas Safari Camp, an outreach program run by Michael Marbach Executive Director of the Christian Outdoor Alliance. This month we thought we’d let you know that Walker had a great hunt and a wonderful experience overall at the 700 Springs Ranch, as the picture of him and his axis buck clearly shows.
So just how did Walker’s hunt go?
According to COA’s Michael Marbach, it couldn’t have gone better.
“It has been a life long dream of mine to be involved and work with Texas Trophy Hunters,” said Michael. “It was even more thrilling to involve a very deserving young man like Walker Jackson. I want to thank Texas Trophy Hunters for providing the scholarship that allowed Walker to experience the COA hunting and fishing summer camp. Because of their generosity and that of the 700 Springs Ranch, Walker was able to take his first deer—for it to be an axis buck was the icing on the cake!” |

76% of Sportsmen Say They Prefer to Elect
a President Who Hunts or Fishes
Sportsmen have a solid history of voting, with nine in 10 currently registered to vote, and of those, 83 percent say they will vote in the November election, according to a new survey by the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation. Overall, there are an estimated 40 million sportsmen of voting age in the United States.
“Sportsmen are active voters and prefer candidates who align with them on hunting and fishing issues,” said Jeff Crane, president of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation. “The attention presidential candidates give to sportsmen's issues is well-aimed.”

Using Your Cow As Bear Repellent
Hygiene, Colorado — A bear got into Nancy Dayton’s apple tree Sunday evening. Thankfully, her trusty cow was on watch.
Yes, cow.
According to Dayton’s renters on Hygiene Road, her cow Apple touched noses with the young black bear before finally chasing it off.
“That’s one tough heifer, let me tell you!” Dayton said, laughing.
“If we could have gotten it on video … ,” said Jack McDonald, one of Dayton’s renters.
McDonald was the one who discovered the bear around 5 p.m., when he heard noise outside.
“The squirrels were doing their chattering, and I thought one of the cats had caught a bird,” he said. “So I went to the apple tree. And he’s there. And I’m here. I went to Penny (Cox, a neighboring renter) and said, ‘It’s a bear! It’s a bear!’”
According to Cox and McDonald, the bear had started to roam a little, when Apple approached from a neighboring field. The two animals stared at each other, the bear even climbing the fence so it could get a better look at Apple.
“After they touched noses, the cow chased the bear to the apple tree,” McDonald said. “They hung out by the apple tree for a while, and then the cow chased him to the fence. It was hilarious.”
The bear fled down the fence line, still pursued by Apple.
It’s only the second time that a bear has come on the property since Dayton purchased it 14 years ago. The last time, about five or six years back, a black bear was treed by a tenant’s Rhodesian ridgeback dogs.
Damage was minimal, Dayton said—just some broken branches and a bit of disturbed garbage from when the bear rooted in the trash bin for a moment.
“He wasn’t at all aggressive or anything,” said Cox. “He was just being a bear.—Courtesy Scott Rochat, Longmont Times-Call |
