Locked-Out—The Hunting Lease Dilemma

In every hunter’s life a little rain must fall—both literally and figuratively. Such is the latter case when a hunter suddenly finds him or herself without a hunting lease. Whether known in advance or totally unexpected, the realization of having nowhere to hunt can be devastating to many. Many years ago, due to changes in IRS tax deductions and entertainment write-offs, people declared there would be an abundance of hunting leases available as big companies let their leases go. It didn’t happen. Now folks are saying due to high fuel prices, whitetails being priced by their Boone and Crockett (B&C) score, and an assortment of other factors, hunting leases will once again be easy to find.

Man Wrestles Deer Inside Hair Salon
From NBC News—Bucks County, Pennsylvania, man goes mano-a-mano with a deer. Not so unusual, right? Except it wasn't in the wild.

The big buck came crashing through the window of a busy hair salon in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. Pictures captured by cell phone show the damage done not by a car, but a 150-pound deer that ran straight through a three-inch glass door and inside the Holiday Hair Salon at Quakertown Plaza Tuesday afternoon May 20.

Randy Goepfert says the disoriented deer began to lunge toward his 10-year-old son Tyler who was getting a hair cut.

Tyler Goepfert said, “I was kind of shocked. As soon as it came in I was ‘Oh my gosh, what is that?’”

“It was mind over matter, I wasn't going to let anything happen to my son, so the only thing I knew was I grabbed [the deer] like a wrestler and put him in a headlock and threw him on the ground and held him there,” said Randy Goepfert.

Randy says the deer then broke free and headed to the back of the salon into the path of four kids, two mothers, and three stylists.

“Oh my God, I just can’t believe this is happening. I’m just glad Randy was here when it happened,” said stylist Beth Hunsberger.

That's because Randy was able to block the deer inside a back room until a state gaming officer was forced to euthanize the deer due to [its] extensive injuries.

Goepfert believes the overbuilding of areas like Quakertown means little natural habitat for deer to roam, leaving many disoriented and scared. He and his son say they are just relieved the deer could be stopped before any more damage was done.

“I think it was really brave of him, I don’t think I’d do that!” said son Tyler.
