In The Lap of a Good Hunt
By Kristin D. Morris

Kristin D. MorrisMy legs were starting to cramp from a half-hour of careful, minimal movement, but the musty odor of hunting gear lingered to remind me of why I was there and heighten my anticipation of the big bucks I hoped would soon show up. I looked through the binocular into a low-lying blanket of fog, finding another silhouette moving about. Up until that moment, previous such-veiled movements had turned out to be nothing more than the facades of limbs blowing and hungry javelinas, but this time there was no mistaking the certain outline of a deer.

TTHA Continues Show Of Support To Our Military Heroes

Texas Trophy Hunters Association (TTHA) is proud to announce the continuation of its sponsorship of Show of Support (SOS). Show of Support was developed in 2004 by Terry Johnson of Midland, Texas, as his way of saying “Thank you” to the men and women of our military. This year’s annual Show of Support 2008 Hunt for Heroes banquet will be held Thursday, November 20, at the Horseshoe Arena in Midland, Texas. The event will be preceded by a parade. Following the banquet, these heroes will be taken on an all expense paid hunting trip, and TTHA’s cameras will be right there, capturing all of the exciting action.

New Orleans Mayor Admits Illegal Gun Confiscation, Settles With NRA

After a three-year legal battle over the unconstitutional confiscation of lawfully owned firearms during Hurricane Katrina, this week, the City of New Orleans agreed to settle a lawsuit initiated by NRA. A permanent injunction has been issued against the city, Mayor Ray Nagin, and current Police Chief Warren Riley. The Second Amendment Foundation assisted NRA in the legal battle against Mayor Ray Nagin and the City of New Orleans.

“This is an important victory for the citizens of New Orleans and the Second Amendment,” said Wayne LaPierre, NRA’s executive vice president. “We fought for three long years in a fundamental legal challenge to assert the inherent self-defense rights for law-abiding citizens, knowing the Constitution would prevail. Today it has prevailed and freedom has won.”

News of the Weird

Outfoxing The Fox

Tommy Fox was driving home from his job in Dover [Tennessee], when a beautiful red fox dashed in front of his SUV. After he ran over the fox, he stopped his GMC Jimmy to get the fox to cut off its tail for a souvenir, and he put it in the back seat, said Dale Grandstaff, a Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency wildlife officer.

“The tails are real bushy and pretty and thick this time of year,” Grandstaff said.

Things took an odd turn when Fox heard a noise coming from his back seat and realized the fox was alive—and not happy. The driver desperately searched for something to hold the fox back and prevent him from climbing into the front seat and biting him, he told Grandstaff. As he looked in the back seat to get a blanket to block the fox, he took his attention from the road.

The SUV crossed the center line and wrecked in a ditch, flipping once and landing upside down, Grandstaff said. Fox suffered minor injuries and bruises and was treated at the scene by Montgomery County Emergency Medical Service.

The fox was found dead in the SUV. Grandstaff said it was not clear whether the animal died of injuries caused by being hit by the SUV or if it died in the wreck. It was also not known if Tommy Fox got to keep the tail.—Courtesy Tavia D. Green, The Tennessean online www.tenesseean.com.

Hunter Extravaganza Attendee Wins Big With Hustler Turf Equipment

Hustler Turf EquipmentCharles King from Silsbee, Texas, is the proud new owner of a brand new Hustler Z mower, all because he attended one of TTHA’s Hunters Extravaganza and got to chance to enter a contest.

That contest was sponsored by Hustler Turf Equipment and Dealers Outdoor Supply, one of its Texas distributors. Attendees at all three Extravaganzas received vouchers they could take to their local Hustler Turf Equipment dealer, where they could then test drive a Hustler mower and register to win the special camo-covered version. Charles King got his voucher at the Houston Extravaganza, then opted for his test-drive at Hardin County Tractor, one of Hustler’s top five dealers in Texas. He almost didn’t believe he’d won when the call came in.

“I started quizzing the lady who called about the details of the mower,” said King. “When she started explaining, I knew it wasn’t a prank. I got so excited I had to call them back to hear the details again!”

The mower King won was a Hustler Z with a 25HP Kawasaki and a 60-inch deck valued at more than $10,000—and that makes saying it pays to go to one of TTHA’s Hunters Extravaganzas an understatement. Our many thanks for Hustler Turf for partnering with us in this effort.
