Feature Story
Sand Land Booner
The first buck of a lifetime hunter takes is one for the books.
By Horace Gore

Jeff Bradley - TTHA JournalJeff Bradley of Bedford, Texas, has proved that trophy whitetails are where you find them. He’s also demonstrated that old, abandoned peanut country in Central Texas can produce a monster whitetail that most hunters think only comes from South Texas. On November l, 2008, Jeff killed his first whitetail buck—a 21-point that grossed 207 1/8 and netted 200 Boone and Crockett (B&C). I’ll bet my horse and dog that it’ll be the biggest buck killed on open range in Texas during the 2008-’09 season. What’s more, Jeff was hunting on the family’s 700-acre lease in Eastland County, an area of sandy land better known for post oak, peanuts, and oil than it is for whitetail bucks.

Alert: Texas Senate Bill 730 and House Bill 1301

Texas Senate Bill 730, authored by Senator Glenn Hegar (R-Katy) and House Bill 1301, authored by Rep. Stephen Frost (D-Atlanta) would allow possession of firearms and ammunition on an employer's parking lot when stored in a private locked vehicle and would protect law abiding employees from termination for this possession. The joint bills would also provide civil immunity to an employer acting within state law. This is the third legislative session for this important self-protection project.

News of the Weird
Hammer Time Hurts Indiana Man

A man cleaning up his new mobile-home lot in Pleasant Lake, Indiana decided it was “hammer time” when disposing of a .22-caliber bullet he found. George Fath, afraid his three young boys would get hurt by the bullet, smashed it with his hammer, causing it to explode, knocking him off his feet, and prompting his wife to dial 911. Police reports stated that Fath wasn’t struck by the bullet, but did suffer a minor abrasion to his abdomen. But, Fath did report to television station WANE in Fort Wayne, Indiana, that the bullet did go in his stomach and doctors removed it at the hospital. "I wasn't thinking about it. It was the dumbest thing I ever did in my life. I suggest nobody do it," Fath said.—courtesy WANE-TV
