The Journal
Just Like I Drew It Up
By Aaron Elmendorf
Having children is one of the happiest moments of life. Once it happens, all you can think about is all the responsibility you have and all of the traditions and experiences that you will pass on to them. Hunting was definitely one of my favorite things that I planned on handing down.

TTHA Supports Reading, Writing

Richard Sanchez, one of The Journal’s member story contributors, gave a reading of his story “El Diablo” Oct. 1 at the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library Edinburg, Texas. The event, co-sponsored by the Texas Rio Writers of South Texas and other writer’s groups, encourages reading and writing to children.
“We had a very good turnout,” Sanchez said. “The ladies at the library went all out hosting the event. They had table cloths on the tables and a really nice setup for the refreshment and snack tables.”
Sanchez signed autographs and handed out copies of the July/August edition of The Journal, where his story appeared.
“The public loved your magazine,” he said. “The boys are still talking about those giant whitetail deer in the photos and are asking as to when we're going to do this again. Thanks for making this possible.”
Show of Support
Texas Trophy Hunters was present again at this year’s Show of Support event in Midland, honoring our military heroes. The event included a banquet, parade, and a Texas whitetail hunt provided to returning veterans. These men and women chosen for the hunt are still undergoing rehabilitation, for which Show of Support provides a reprieve from physical therapy, surgeries and hospitalization, if only for a short time. There were over 2,000 people in attendance. The soldiers were presented camo, rifles and all supplies and then taken whitetail hunting for three days. TTHA was a rifle sponsor again this year and presented autographed items on behalf of Ted Nugent and Randy Carroll of San Antonio’s KJ-97 radio, who provided a Show of Support poster autographed by some of today’s top country music artists at the 2009 Country Music Awards. These items were used as part of the Show of Support fundraising auction. Look for these soldiers’ moving stories on TTHA’s “Trophy Hunters TV” show in 2010.

TTHA’s Texas Sized Giveaway Winner Bags Big Buck

Eddie Graf from Eagle Pass, Texas was chosen as the Grand Prize Winner in the Texas Sized Giveaway drawing from the 2009 Hunters Extravaganza® hosted by the Texas Trophy Hunters Association. The Grand Prize, a South Texas Trophy Whitetail Hunt at the Charco Marrano Ranch, took place on Opening Weekend of whitetail season.
As the Athletic Director for Eagle Pass ISD, Eddie was attending a middle school football game when he got the notification call from TTHA’s Steve Grams.
“Are you sure this isn’t one of my friends pulling my leg?” asked Eddie after being informed of winning the hunt valued at over $9,000.
Eddie successfully shot a massive 10-point buck and enjoyed one spectacular weekend. Look for the complete story of the hunt in an upcoming issue of The Journal of the Texas Trophy Hunters.
Plans for the 2010 Texas Sized Giveaway are under way. You could be the next winner, but only if you register to win. Continue to check out the Contest Page on TTHA.com for more ways to win from TTHA.
News of the Weird
Yosemite black bears select minivan as “Car of the Year”
An article in the October 2009 issue of the Journal of Mammalogy says minivans receive high marks from black bears in Yosemite National Park wanting to score a meal. According to the article, from 2001 to 2007, minivans had the largest or second largest number of vehicle break-ins by bears. When researchers compared the number of break-ins to the numbers of each type of vehicle visiting the park in 2004 – 2005, only minivans were broken into at a rate higher than expected based on their availability. Possible reasons why are: minivans are more likely to emit food odors because of spilled food and drinks; passengers of minivans are more prone to leave large amounts of food in a vehicle parked overnight; minivans may be structurally easier to break into than other types of vehicles; and a few individual bears could be responsible for all the break-ins, and are displaying a learned behavior for choosing minivans.
